A compassionate book for clinician and client ............

In her new book, Body Sense: Balancing Your Weight and Emotions Brenda Crawford-Clark says that most diets are ineffective because they fail to address the true underlying cause of weight problems: powerful, core feelings that trigger the use of food whether it is eating, not eating, purging or roller-coaster dieting. Her approach to weight loss represents a radical departure from traditional treadmill-running, calorie-counting diets .  Body Sense shatters the myth that a secret diet out there somewhere will solve all of our weight problems, if only we have enough willpower to stick to it, Crawford-Clark  recognizes that weight loss and eating disorders are  far more  complex.

She examines a multitude of factors that can contribute to food and weight.  Issues from stress eating to eating disorders include individual chemical make-up, trauma, family stress, financial difficulties, life transitions, anger and even allergies.

She says people often underestimate the hidden connection to past losses, such as divorce, financial problems, abuse, miscarriage, adoption, bullying, learning disorders and living in a fishbowl (often felt by children of pastors, therapists and media professionals, as well as those with physical disabilities.) Unresolved feelings and self-destructive messages that are often born during these experiences can contribute not only to that drive to use food to get out of feelings, but a continuing pattern of compulsive behaviors or self-destructive relationships.

A systematic, therapist-tested approach that helps readers honor their experiences and disconnect from the pattern of self-destructive reactions is presented. You will be introduced to the key concept of feeling flashbacks, which occur when something  triggers  intense feelings that were felt during a past loss or trauma and become part of the cycle of destructive food use. Crawford-Clark challenges the diet industry's popular assumption that people cannot feel good about themselves and be overweight at the same time. She also believes that all therapists can be and should be trained in recognizing and treating weight and eating disorder issues.

Body Sense will give you new insight and tools to understand why so many people struggle with their weight and why there has been such a high relapse among those with eating disorders. It goes a step beyond in giving you a resource package that you can put to use immediately to help clients from continuing in that pattern.
