Darkened Corners:
Violence,Trauma and Recoveryby Phoenix Helm Simpson, MFT, LMFT
When I began composing this course it was in answer to the need for an online course in domestic violence and child abuse. In light of the recent tragedy I have addressed a more global perspective to the issue of violence as it will most certainly impact each of us in our lives and in our work. In the midst of this horror, my hope is for finding peace within ourselves and in the world.
Many of us acknowledge the dark and light side of human being as a natural matter of course in our profession. When, however, the darkness of violence explodes and envelopes us on such a global scale as the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon Tuesday, 9/11/01, we are all likely to be shaken to our cores. Whether they be personal as in the case of family violence, social as in school violence or political as in Tuesday's attack, acts of violence impact us on our deepest level of survival and leave us questioning our sense of safety in the world.
