Darkened Corners II: Domestic Violence, Spousal and Elder Abuse

The darkest part of being human is our capacity for violence.  This is often hidden and unresolved in the recesses of our unconscious. Violent responses would ordinarily only emerge in reaction to an extreme threat.  In families where there is ongoing violence, therapy can be like walking through a darkened corridor. In the intrapsychic maze of the violent family,  survival and extinction are merged.  There is often a palpable sense of fear, agitation and hypervigilance present in the family members.  For the  therapist there may be a heightened sense of needing to do 'the right thing' and not make any mistakes. There are many factors that contribute to violent relationships including personal history, childhood abuse, poverty, substance abuse,  PTSD, and social  value systems.  It is the current opinion that to change these dynamics we are going to have a multidisciplinary approach, legal, clinical, medical and social.  In this course we will try to understand the stresses contributing to family violence and begin to bring light into these darkened corners.
 

By taking this online 8 CE participant will

• be able identify indicators of physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect for spouses and elders
• identify treatment modalities
• develop a treatment plan based upon client needs
• be familiar with community intervention
