The Making of a Therapist: Developmental Considerations and Therapeutic Models for Supervision

Parts I and II

The most visible creators I know of are those artists whose medium is life itself.  The ones who express the inexpressible--without brush, hammer, clay, or guitar.  They neither paint nor sculpt--their medium is being.  Whatever their presence touches has increased life.  They see and don't have to draw. They are artists of being alive

Many sculptors describe their work as a process of uncovering and discovering what lies beneath their magnificent materials; to discover the hidden swirl and patterns within the marble and to let them emerge with all their unique brilliance and beauty.  As both supervisors and therapists we are engaged in a parallel process with life.  By knowing our inner selves we are better able to guide the hands of clients, interns and supervisees so that their own brilliance may emerge.

Part One of this course  briefly covers developmental levels and highlights an inclusive and well thought out model of therapy presented that is able to view presenting issues over the four dimensions of psychological experience: personal history, current milieu, in session dynamics, and  the realm of spiritual lessons.  Several tools and techniques of supervision are included. This model is helpful particularly in supervision when interns come from many different therapeutic viewpoints.   Particular issues in supervision in schools, sandplay and play therapy sessions are covered.

Part Two provides the reader with an unique in depth view of  stages we go through in the acceptance of the mantle of therapist.  The author is humorous and revealing in her anecdotes regarding her adventures in supervision.  In Part Two, the process of supervision is focused on both from the individual process of becoming a therapist and the relationship and responsibility between supervisor and intern.

"Over the years I have noticed that the developmental stages of a therapist often parallel human development.  Students  enter the field wide eyed, a little frightened, and in awe of their new journey.  There is an excitement and self -centeredness  evident, as the desire to serve and help motivates them toward this new adventure." (excerpt)

I want to thank you for offering this class on line; I was very pleased with the content.  It is relevant to live work situations.  I have been a therapist for 13 and a clinical supervisor for 7 years.  I really liked and use the integrated and the developmental models when I supervise.  This helped make operational the skills that a therapist needs to have and how a clinical supervisor can assist in their professional growth.  I appreciated the information on the Integrated Therapeutic Model, and using the map from the Medicine Wheel of Native American Indians.  As a Native American and a Native American Mental Health Specialist this made perfect sense to me.  Your class was informative; I was able to do the class at work, thus saving money on travel and time out of the office.   I will most likely take another class in the future.  Thanks, I was able to print my certificate today…..K.
